About this watch

Manufacture of reference 3417 by Patek Philippe began in 1958 and ended around the 1970s, making it the brand’s first ‘Anti-Magnetic’ wristwatch to be produced in series. This was a major breakthrough in the watchmaking industry, as the anti-magnetic feature was a sign of superiority and was proudly displayed on the dial of the watch. The watch was only available in stainless steel, making it an alluring choice for those who wanted a reliable and durable timepiece. The watch was also highly accurate due to its water-resistant and dust-proof qualities. It had a unique sapphire crystal and a hand-wound movement, which made it stand out from the rest. The watch was designed to last for many years and was a popular choice among watch enthusiasts for its unique features and extraordinary quality.

Of the over 1000 pieces of the reference 3417 produced only twelve pieces of the first batch (with a matching Type 0 case and movement) ever appeared.

The first batch of the reference were fitted with a cal. 12 AM 400 movement (as of 1960, the calibre 27-AM 400 was used until the models’ discontinuation) Caliber 12 AM 400 movement is regarded by many as the most desirable manual movement made by Patek Philippe, it is fitted with a gold or beryllium lever escapement and covered by a soft iron (permalum) cap. The caliber was designed to withstand up to 450 oersteds of magnetic strength, in other words, more than four times the level of magnetism needed to stop a standard watch.

The Type 1 two-piece, screw-down case of the present timepiece is built to the highest standard, being water-resistant and fitted with a protective permalon cover (similar to soft iron). This case protects the highly accurate mechanical movement housed within, and is also the perfect backdrop for the spectacular dial.

Several versions of the Stern Freres dial were produced, some having a signature ‘Amagnetic’ printed onto them, while the present timepiece has the most thought after Type 0 dial. The dial was engraved and filled with enamel paint followed by a coverage of a special Zapon lacquer. The watch for sale here had less than Zapon lacquer applied than other known pieces and might have went through some restoration. However the Signature print (that usually disappears in restoration/cleaning work) is in great condition. The combination of the durable case and the spectacular dial make this timepiece a truly unique and timeless piece of craftsmanship.

This watch is a rare find, and it is certain to please even the most discerning collectors. It is a great addition to any collection, and a timeless reminder of the history of watchmaking.
